Red Light Therapy for Pain Relief
Learn about the health benefits of red light therapy.
What is Red Light Therapy?
Red light therapy is a form of low-level laser therapy that utilizes near-infrared light, which penetrates the skin to treat inflammation and pain and promote tissue regeneration. The device itself produces a wavelength of around 630-900 nanometers; enough to penetrate through the skin and into muscle tissue, but not so intense as to burn or damage the skin like UV light treatments. The laser is not only safe but also actively beneficial for the skin, muscles, and tissues in treated areas, as cells repair and function more efficiently by absorbing the laser’s energy. In all, red light therapy is an effective and non-invasive solution to treating a variety of skin afflictions and painful conditions.
How Will It Help?
Red light therapy provides your cells’ mitochondria with additional energy, which in turn allows all cells under treatment to regenerate and function at a faster, stronger rate. The boost in functionality can help alleviate painful conditions and promote quicker healing in any wounds. Additionally, high mitochondrial efficiency can increase your metabolism, which directly contributes to weight loss.
The laser also increases the production of a structural protein called collagen, an essential and abundant component of many tissues. These proteins can especially help skin cells by maintaining their structure and internal cellular processes, making red light a great treatment for skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis. It also does well in clearing up unwanted scars, wrinkles, stretch marks, or other blemishes on the skin.
Underneath the skin, damaged or sore muscle tissue can benefit from red light therapy as well. This is done by increasing blood circulation, which speeds up regeneration in any injuries or wounds in muscle tissue. This, combined with increased mitochondrial function and collagen production, makes red light excel as an effective treatment for tendinopathy, muscle soreness, and inflammation.
Where Can I Get Treatment?
Red light therapy is a common treatment option in most dermatologist or aesthetician practices, as well as other institutions that offer skin care. Treatments typically range between $40-$150 per session, depending on the length, equipment, provider, and location. Red light therapy can be done at home with over-the-counter laser products for a lower price, but clinics typically have more powerful devices and professionals on hand to determine proper treatment plans.
